The Word Bug and The Wonder of Learning Words

Parents often tell me they want their children to “increase their vocabulary.” To be perfectly honest, that request or rather its way, makes me cringe a little. It sounds somewhat mechanical and takes discovery out of the process. I love the sound and feel of words.

Words, Play and Bonding

The Word Bug is a concept that teaches that words are wonderful in an infectious kind of way. Picture a bug bite that doesn’t cause itching, swelling or freak out mum or dad on the ride to the doctor. Instead, it engages you in word play.

Try this. Sound out the word bumptious, unfold it, slosh it around your mouth, bump-ti-ous. It’s a nice sounding word that means pushy. This is perfunctory for some but sharing new words is catchy. Encourage children to make a collection of their favourites and you can have a word collection of your own. It’s a great way to bond that marries learning with play.
